It's a Girl?

I had my first baby dream Friday night. Up until now, the most "motherly" my dreams have gotten have been playing with and taking care of little puppies. But it's safe to say those kinds of dreams are fairly typical for me. There's actually a YouTube video that is an exact live reenactment of a dream I had about 5 years ago. I was in a big field laying in the grass, and a bunch of yellow puppies were crawling all over me. It was so ridiculously cute, I actually laughed in my sleep, and woke up crying because I was laughing so hard. This lucky man got to live it in real life.

ANYWAY.

I had a dream that R and I went to go get our first sonogram (which we're doing in a week!). It was fairly normal, until the fetus started talking to us through the screen, saying "I'm a girl! I'm a girl! I'm a girl!" over and over again. And then there was a pause. Then she said "...and I'm black!"

I really have no idea what that says about me, but this was another dream I woke up laughing from. I've been waiting for these so-called baby dreams to start happening (everyone has told me how strange their dreams are in pregnancy, and how they have dreams about the baby), but if they're already starting off strange, I'm not sure I can handle what's to come. Then again, if they're as funny as this one, I can't wait.

And I also can't help but wonder if I'm having a girl. I've felt the whole time that I'm having a girl, but who knows. I even did that Chinese gender predictor calendar thing online for fun, and that said it was going to be a girl, so I guess we'll know (hopefully) in a week from Wednesday!

It's In the Bag

I ordered my diaper bag yesterday. It's strange to think that I. Just. Ordered. A. Diaper. Bag. This pregnancy thing is slowly sinking in, can you tell? Anyway, I had really liked the style of the bags from Petunia Pickle Bottom (I found out about them in a magazine I was looking through.), but they were WAY too expensive to spend on a diaper bag. Or any bag, as far as my budget goes.

While I was looking for some other bags, I came across some suggestions about other bags, and someone mentioned Petunia Pickle Bottom had an outlet store online! Whee! They just so happened to have the style of bag I wanted, and had a few remaining ones left. The one I chose may not have been my first choice as far as looks (the ones I REALLY liked were all sold out already), but I think I'm going to love it. It's incredibly girly, and R has already refused to carry it (I told him we can get something "manly" for him to have when he has the baby on his own). But aside from being girly, it looks functional, and the attached diaper pad just looks convenient. I was able to handle the price a bit better, considering most of the diaper bags I had seen (even at Target) were in the same range, but not nearly as awesome.  The bag can be worn as a messenger, or a backpack, and has loads of pockets. AND it can be wiped clean, and is waterproof. Win!

Belly Photos

I haven't taken any belly photos yet, and I need to start this week. I'd like to do a maternity series consisting of weekly photos (inspired by this series), but I don't want to rip off that idea. While looking for inspiration, I came across the gem below. I mean, this is beyond obnoxious, but it almost makes me sad I won't be pregnant on Halloween.

Attack of the Belly!

I just had to officially document that R and I noticed that I "look pregnant" this past Friday. Is it weird to say that I am more aware of my uterus than I used to be? You probably would be, too, if it was poking out of your lower abdomen. I'm not huge or anything yet, but there's no more hiding it (not that I was). I've been finding myself poking at it a lot over the weekend. It makes me laugh, because it's hard when I poke at it. My upper abdomen feels completely different when I poke it (as it does not contain a uterus), so it's strange to finally start noticing changes due to the pregnancy (other than weight gain) in my body.

Speaking of changes, that whole thing about pregnancy hair is definitely true. I think. While I wish I would stop finding gray hairs on my head, my hair is definitely looking healthier/better than it was a few weeks ago.  It's possible that it's all due to the round brush I rediscovered in my closet and have started using again.

Midwife Appointment 2.0

R and I had our second midwife appointment this past Wednesday. It went well enough. We actually got to hear the heartbeat this time around, so that was fun. We were also told that we'll get to come back in 3 weeks instead of 4 to get our sonogram and (hopefully) find out if the baby is a boy or a girl! Coincidentally enough, the day we will (hopefully) find out is my mom's birthday, and my half-birthday. Not that I celebrate my half-birthday. I've been trying to get away with that for years now, and it hasn't caught on. Maybe this year I'll buy a cupcake for myself.

I also found out some strange news at this appointment. I was told I have Group B Strep (GBS). Never heard of it? I hadn't either, even with the reading I've done so far. I'm apparently "colonized" (this word makes me feel like I've been invaded by little tiny aliens), which means it won't make me sick. It's a normal bacteria found in many pregnant women (and other adults), and while it's harmless to me, it can be very harmful to the baby. It's something that can be passed on to the baby during birth, and can cause some pretty serious health problems, and even death (I think this is when I stopped hearing everything the midwife was telling me).

It sounds fairly alarming just reading about it, but it sounds like it's actually pretty common, so hopefully everything will go well. Basically, the way to treat it, and hopefully avoid any issues, is for me to get an IV for antibiotics as soon as I go into labor. The antibiotics are more for protection for the baby than anything else. As long as I don't go into labor before 37 weeks (something GBS can cause), don't get a fever during labor, and don't have the longest labor ever, we should be good to go. And yes, this kind of makes me nervous, even though the chances of the baby getting sick are low.

After the appointment R and I went and checked out Happybottomus in Overland Park to buy a baby shower gift. They also have all kinds of cloth diapers that we looked into (among other baby things). Then we walked over to Whole Foods to get this pregnancy tea my midwife suggested I take, and I bought a larger-than-my-face double chocolate chip cookie. It was glorious.

I think I'm going to need this shirt...

Can't touch this.

First Four Weeks of the 2nd Trimester

I'm officially well into my second trimester. I'm 17 weeks this week, and have my second midwife appointment coming up. We had our first appointment on Valentine's Day, and we were supposed to be able to hear the baby's heartbeat, but apparently Baby K is a bit active and was kicking too much to hear the heartbeat. Supposedly, we heard about a second of the heartbeat, but it all sounded like "SHHHHHHHHHH" to me. This is probably a sign that I'll be one of those women that won't be able to tell where the baby is when I have my first sonogram.

The second trimester has been good to me so far. No nausea/exhaustion, which I'll gladly accept. Still having some wacky lower back pain every now and then, but the chiropractor has been helping a lot. I highly recommend seeing one throughout your pregnancy if you're able to. I'm thinking about naming my child after mine. Just kidding.

I may have felt little baby kicks this past Saturday, but I'm not sure. It's possible it was just a muscle twitch. Or gas, if I'm being honest. That happens a lot in pregnancy, apparently.
